Remembering Alice Windom - Introduction to Exhibit
Alice Windom (1936-2022) was a native St. Louisan who left her mark as an activist, creative, social worker, and intellectual. Her legacy touched many fields and worlds, and The Griot Museum of Black History is proud to be caring for her voluminous and important personal collection. In 2025, M.A. students in the Museums, Heritage, and Public History program at the University of Missouri -- St. Louis partnered with the Griot, conducting oral histories with Windom's friends and family, supporting preservation efforts with her collection, and digitizing a small portion of her objects to create an intepretive exhibit highlighting her life and legacy. The ensuing pages are the outcome of this effort.
The Griot Museum offers that "Alice Windom was a distinguished community organizer, activist, scholar, historian, educator, "Daughter of Africa," and our dear sister. Her social, political, and humanitiarian impact was far-reaching, from her work in St. Louis to her work across African countries. The Alice Windom Estate has generously donated her extensive library, personal, and professional documents to the Griot Museum of Black History. This remarkable collection, encapsulating a lifetime of experiences and contributions, is a treasure trove that demands preservation and dissemination."
We are honored to have had a tiny part in this critically important work. We heartily encourage you visiting the Griot Museum or making a donation to continue this very important conservation and interpretation of St. Louis history.
