R. Kelly Protest, 2018
-
Description
-
Accusations against Kelly and the complicit executive staff of RCA Records, claimed that Kelly has sexually and physically abused young women for more than a quarter of a century.
Local Black media platforms, such as the St. Louis American, who had been reporting on R. Kelly’s crimes for a decade plus, heavily documented the national momentum of the #MuteRKelly movement. They amplified calls by regional activists to believe survivors and actively reject systems that silence Black women.
The #MuteRKelly movement was a prominent activist campaign launched in 2017 and accelerated in 2018–2019.
Kelly was subsequently convicted on multiple federal counts of racketeering and sex trafficking in 2021 and 2022 and is currently serving a 30-year prison sentence.
