Cahokia Mounds
- Title
- Cahokia Mounds
- Description
- This site is the largest pre-Columbian settlement north of Mexico. At its peak, the population is estimated to be between 10,000 to 20,000. It became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1982. Cahokia Mounds are a significant Native American (Mississippian) historic site that has been preserved and protected by the State of Illinois as a state historic site It gives visitors the opportunity to learn about the Native American culture and history. I feel it belongs on the Landscapes of Hope map because I think having a site which encourages visitors to look back to the past and understand the importance of Native American culture or even simply consider that there were a people here before us can hopefully help us to better understand our own place in history.
