- Description
- Horizontal, black and white advertising card showing the New West End Hotel at Vandeventer and West Belle Place. The front of the card features a halftone print showing a view of the hotel from across the street, looking past a wrought-iron gate with stone columns. The six-story hotel has two distinct wings, with a two-story connection between them. The back of the card advertises the hotel as "the finest and largest colored hotel in the United States." The card also provides details regarding the amenities and rates and boasts that the hotel is "located in the best residential district in town." The West End Hotel was a significant northside landmark in the African American community between 1916-1960, when it was demolished. It served as one of the premiere luxury hotels for African Americans visiting for sporting events during the era of segregation, and later hosted many talented musicians and entertainers such as Billy Holliday at the Waiter's Club on the ground floor.
