- Title
- Baseball Stadium, Likely Stars Park, at the Corner of Compton and Market
- Description
-
Horizontal, black and white photograph showing a baseball stadium, likely Stars Park at the corner of Compton and Market. The photograph shows the entrance to the stadium and the back of the grandstands. Several signs hanging on the grandstands and by the entrance are blurry, but appear to say "St. Louis Stars" and "Stars Park". A wooden fence surrounds the park on either side of the entrance. Faded advertisements are hung on the fence, including ads for Hyde Park beer. There is a car parked in front of a corner building on the left. The building also has an advertisement for Hyde Park Beer, and there is an address over the door: "3291". This is likely 3291 Market. There are several pedestrians on the sidewalks, and the cobblestone street runs through the foreground.
Stars Park was home of the St. Louis Stars, a Negro National League baseball team, and it was one of the few baseball stadiums built specifically for a Negro League team. The park opened in July 1922, and the St. Louis Stars played there from 1922 until the Negro National League folded in 1931. - Creator
