Dear Uncle
Yours of the 5th Inst. was duly received but I have delayed answering as I have had nothing of interest to write. The Spring here thus far for the most of the time has been an exceedingly pleasant one the Winters Mud dried up quite early in the season and since the roads have been in as a good condition as one would wish I often wish when reading the gloomy accounts of the impassable roads which Hookers army have to contend with that it could have as good and solid foundation for maneuvering on as we have here.
I have been passing away the time very pleasantly for some time past myself with some other gentleman from the Barracks who are somewhat on the musical order have been assisting the Young Ladies Union Aid of Society in giving some concerts for the benefit of the sick and wounded soldiers. They were a great success we gave two at first we afterwards gave two more The Mercantile Library Hall where they were held was crowded to excess on each occassion and favorable mention of them were made in the daily Papers. We were invited to deliver one in Alton but as all of us could not leave at the same time we did not go. I enjoyed them very much as they gave me an excellent opportunity of making the acquaintance of severel very agreeable young ladies which of course was very desirable.
There has been considerable excitement in St. Louis for severel days past as the rebels under Hindman and Price have been threatning the city and it was feared that the rebels sympathisers in the city would give us some trouble but the invasion has been promply chucked and no fears are entertained for the present
I had a letter recently from Frances who is in Berea she writes in good spirits and I think she will be well provided for her Uncle has a Scholarship in the College there and I think she will have an excellent opportunity of getting a good education
We have just been having a pleasant time in Camp A friend of mine who is in the Office at Head Quarters has been home on a Furlough and has just got back bringing with him a young bride. I have just been over to call on them she is quite young and it seems quite a pity to bring her away from home among strangers especialy into a camp but I suppose she feels like one of old that "who he is there will I be also"
But I have nothing no more at present Hoping to hear from you again soon I Remain
Your Affectionate Nephew
