Pruitt-Igoe Housing Complex
- Title
- Pruitt-Igoe Housing Complex
- Description
- The Pruitt-Igoe Housing Complex is a defining structure in urbanizing America. These housing structures were built in 1954 following the Housing Act of 1949 and provided 2,870 units to its local residents. This middle-class housing soon became a slum due to the economic and racial problems of the time. It was only three decades after its completion that it was then demolished to accommodate the “white flight” that was taking place in downtown St. Louis.
