Mayor Francis G. Slay signed Executive Order No. 48 on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, the City's last action to accept control of the Metropolitan Police Department from the State of Missouri. At midnight on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, the City of St. Louis regained control of the department, ending 152 years of state rule.
The signing ceremony was held in conjunction with the last scheduled meeting of the Board of Police Commissioners in its role as the governing body of the Metropolitan Police Department, City of St. Louis. Since 1861, the primary function of the Board has been to oversee the effective operations of the Department. The five-member board included four civilians who were appointed by the Governor of Missouri and the Mayor of St. Louis who served as an ex-officio member. Present and past Board members were honored at the meeting for their dedicated service to the Department and the people of St. Louis.
