- Description
- Washington Park Cemetery was established in 1920 as the first Black cemetery in St. Louis. From the beginning, due to racism and segregation issues within St. Louis, Washington Park has not received the support and respect that most cemeteries receive. This monument pays tribute to those whose rest was disrupted by the many construction projects that fragmented Washington Park Cemetery from 1950 to 1996. The result was the disinterment of 12,000 to 13,600 individuals. Due to the mismanagement of burial records, many of those transferred to other cemeteries were lost. Their remains are misplaced, but they are not forgotten.
