- Former Site of the Richardson House
- Description
- This is the site of the former home of Scovel Richardson, civil rights activist and Judge of the U.S. Customs Court and the U.S. Court of International Trade. Richardson was denied the ability to purchase the house that stood here because of a racially restrictive covenant, that put him on the same level of nuisance as a “scrap shop” just because of his race. Setting the framework for the future landmark Shelley v. Kraemer case in 1947 - a case over a house just down the street on Labadie Avenue - Richardson successfully dismantled the ramshackle, indefensible covenant that prevented him from purchasing this home, delivering a decisive blow to those who wished to keep African Americans out of their communities.
