“Sole Provider” by Joseph Mutasa, b. 1964.
“Sole Provider” depicts a mother and her two children huddled together, absent a father. The sculpture is meant to depict the human experience of families losing a breadwinner to violence. The mother is reassuring, placing her hands on her children’s shoulders, yet her expression is also pensive, representing the fear a newly single parent must balance with their responsibility to their children. The statue was donated to the Missouri Botanical Gardens in 2001, where it was on display as part of a months-long exhibit that coincided with the September 11th attacks. This show of international solidarity with Americans who had just lost spouses and parents was the generous gift of the Chapungu Sculpture Park, located in the Zimbabwean capital of Harare. - Creator
