- Description
- Originally constructed to house famous artistic masterpieces, the Spanish Pavilion was first erected in New York for the 1964 World’s Fair before St. Louis mayor Alfonso J. Cervantes convinced the Spanish government to rebuild it in the Gateway City. Although intended to serve as a reminder of St. Louis’ past as a Spanish colony and current status as a cultural hub of activity, the Spanish International Pavilion only remained open for a single year before foreclosing. However, its impressive architecture and unique history remain a monument to Mayor Cervantes and his pride in the Spanish heritage of many St. Louisans.
