BIG MOUND, FIFTH AND MOUND STREETS.
- Title
- BIG MOUND, FIFTH AND MOUND STREETS.
- Description
- Four men stand on top of the Big Mound on Fifth and Mound Streets. A wooden fence separates the mound from the street, and a few buildings with smokestacks can be seen nearby. Engraved in the top-left corner of the daguerreotype is "Scovill Mfg Co. Extra". The mound was one of 27 ceremonial mounds constructed by the Mississippian Indians at the site of present-day St. Louis. The mounds were used for burials and other rituals. This mound was the largest and served as a landmark for travelers along the Mississippi River, who dubbed St. Louis "Mound City" in honor of the two mounds they could see from the river. This mound was the last to be razed to make way for building and road construction in 1868-1869.
