The mission of the department of athletics is to provide a program of intercollegiate athletics that fosters and supports a positive educational and athletic experience, not only for student-athletes, but also for the entire University of Missouri-St. Louis community. Rivermen & Riverwomen Mascot Article
In 1966 UMSL adopted the Riverman & Riverwoman as a mascot. It was chosen by the administration because of Saint Louis' connection to the Mississippi River at that time. In 1995, the school abandoned the mascot due to disinterest. The Triton was chosen in 2010 as a mascot & later named Louie.
Vintage Sports Schedule
A sports schedule from an issue of The Current, 1979. UMSL athletics were members of the NCAA in the past. In 1995 UMSL athletics joined the Great Lakes Valley Conference & plays against 13 teams in IL, IN, IA & MO today. You can see several of the sports (whitewater kayaking?) from back in the day have been discontinued.

Fun photo of vintage Rivermen Mascot, cheerleaders & President Weaver from 1968. Recently, The Sports Hall of Fame was created by the Alumni Relations and the Athletic Departments to honor sports playing UMSL alumni. The induction ceremony for 12 inaugural alumni members was held on June 9th, 2001.
