Bellerive

Bellerive Acres, formally the Village of Bellerive, is a small suburban city in North St. Louis. With a population of less than 200 people, as of the 2020 census, Bellerive could be thought of as a shadow of what it once was. In the 1970s the populations of Bellerive peaked with over double the population living in Bellerive at that time than at the present. The positive side of this demographic change, however, is that the city has become more diverse over time. Regardless, there are two important institutions that have persisted over time that this section will highlight: one important to the community and one important to UMSL. These are the Bellerive Country Club and the UMSL Chancellor's Residence.

Bellerive Country Club

The Bellerive Country Club was first founded 126 years ago as The Field Club. In 1910 it moved and was renamed to the Bellerive Country Club. Finally, in 1959, it moved to the location it is in today. The previous location was sold to Normandy School District and became the campus for UMSL. The Bellerive Country Club is world renown as it has hosted several "big name" golfing tournaments. This includes the U.S. Open in 1965 and the PGA Championship in 2018.

This is an image of the Bellerive Country Club house from 1960. Between the date of this photo, October 28, 1960, and opening on Memorial Day of 1960 this is likely one of the first images of the new building.

In this newspaper article discusses how the men's tournament will likely be recorded breaking, but it also alludes to the fact that the country club was the location of the inaugural women's tournament for Missouri.

The PGA Championship was the last major tournament to take place at Bellerive Country Club, but more are scheduled. These are the BMW Championship in 2026 and the Presidents Cup in 2030.

Hundreds of world famous golfers have played at the Bellerives Country Club over the years. This includes Dustin Johnson, the world’s best player in 2018.

Chancellor's Residence

The Chancellor's Residence for UMSL is a Tudor style house that was built in 1935. It acts as both a house for the chancellor of UMSL and as a location for the chancellor to entertain visitors of UMSL. It is perfectly located only a 10-minute walk from the Millennium Student Center for visitors to quickly and easily come over when events are taking place at the residency.

The house has not changed much over the 60 years. This image shows what the house looked like when first bought by the University. Aesthetically, it looks much the same.

The Chancellor's Residence has had improvements over the years. The last major work was done in 2004. The cost was around $193,000. The previous, and only other, upgraded by the University were in 1986.

Graduation and the diploma is the goal that all college students  should strive for and when it is achieved the chancellor would invite them over to celebrate.

The Chancellor's House also serves are a meeting location for important donors to congregate so that the University can thank them for the aid they provide. The work UMSL does would not be nearly as effective without donors.
