Chinese American in St. Louis

Chinese immigration to St. Louis began in the mid-19th century, as workers left New York and San Francisco for employment and settled into Hop Alley on the edge of Downtown on the site of what is now Busch Stadium. The 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act prohibited additional immigration from China, which ensured that this community stayed the same. This Chinatown served as home and business district for approximately 300-400 Chinese Americans into the 20th century until Urban Renewal decimated the community in favor of a parking lot for the baseball stadium.
