-
Description
-
Horizontal black and white image shows Police Lt. Robert Scheetz, left, and Detective John Livingston, center, remove William Luther, an ACTION demonstrator, wearing a sign from St. Louis Cathedral. Luther's sign reads "[Cardinal Carberry] makes a mockery of the real church." Detective William Hawkins, right, restrains another Black demonstrator. There is a small crowd of white men around the two.
This photograph was published in the July 7, 1969 issue of the St. Louis Globe-Democrat with a caption that read: "Police Lt. Robert Scheetz, in uniform at left, and Detective John Livingston, center, remove an ACTION demonstrator from St. Louis Cathedral while Detective William Hawkins restrains another demonstrator who was assaulted by an unidentified churchgoer." The headline for the accompanying article was "Whites Attack Militants in St. Louis Cathedral" and outlined the events that occurred as three young protestors demonstrated against issues related to church ownership of tax-delinquent properties. The protestors entered the Cathedral during a service (one was wearing clothing similar to church vestments), stood in front of the congregation silently for four minutes with protest signs, then chanted "racists" as they attempted to exit the building. Members of the congregation began yelling back at them, at least one tried to physically assault them, and they only exited the building safely with the protection of detectives and police. The protestors were charged with disturbing a religious assembly and resisting arrest. None of the congregation members were arrested or charged.
